WHAT?
The Second Great Awakening began in the late 1790s and early 1800s. It was a religious revival of protestant beliefs and rode the wave of the Market Revolution.CAUSES
The American Revolution happened before the Second Great Awakening and caused the idea of individualism and rejection of authority to seep into the second iteration of the Great Awakening. The Enlightenment was another cause because it promoted individuality. The free market of religious ideas was another cause because during the Market Revolution, American society got more competitive and people embraced individualism.
EFFECTS
The effects of the Second Great Awakening were increased support for methodist, presbyterian, and baptist denominations. It also influenced other reform movements such as the women's rights and temperance movements.
