Temperance Movement

 

WHAT?

The Temperance Movement began in 1838 and was against the consumption of alcohol.

CAUSES

There was rampant irresponsible drinking in America during this time. Reformers said that drunk men abused their families and were a danger to the general public and lost income for their family due to their heavy drinking.

EFFECTS

There was a decline in the consumption of alcohol and the effects of alcoholism was taught in many schools. Some states passed alcohol prohibition laws.
